Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome and thank you for your interest. The purpose of this page is to list Frequently Asked Questions along with answers to them.  If you have any questions regarding Spokane C.O.P.S. in general, please go to our Contact Us page to call us.  We'll answer your question to the best of our ability and post it for others to see if appropriate.  Your name will NOT be referenced in any way on this page.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Question: What is Spokane C.O.P.S.?
Answer:
Spokane C.O.P.S. is a 501c3 non-profit organization partnering with Spokane Police Department and Department of Corrections in providing services to the neighborhood for the betterment of the entire community.  This is accomplished through the use of volunteers who live, work, own a business or property in, or have vested interest in the community, in partnership with law enforcement agencies.

Question:  Are Spokane C.O.P.S. members of law enforcement?
Answer:
Yes and No.  Generally speaking Spokane C.O.P.S. volunteers donate their time to work in a Spokane C.O.P.S. Substation within Spokane. The Spokane C.O.P.S. organization is in partnership with Spokane Police Department (SPD). SPD provides funds for support staff, substation phones, security systems, and rental agreements for all substations.  SPD representatives serve on the C.O.P.S. Board of Directors.  They also furnish professional training to C.O.P.S. volunteers, Neighborhood Observation Patrol (N.O.P.) and the Crime Free Multi-Housing (Crime Free Multi-Housing) Program.  SPD supplies C.O.P.S. with seven Neighborhood Resource Officers (NROs) and one Sergeant to focus on neighborhood issues and maintain communications between Law Enforcement and the community through substation operations.  Workstations are available in all substations for patrol officers to use while out in the neighborhoods.

Question: How do I obtain a copy of a police report?

Answer: Allow 24 hours and then call Spokane Police Department Records (625-4030).  It would help if you had an incident number.

Question: I have a dispute with a fellow resident in my apartment building.  The landlord/owner is not responsive.  What do I do?

Answer: Unless there is a dangerous situation in the building, this is a landlord/tenant dispute.  You can call the local office of the Washington State Attorney's Office at 456-3123.  You may also contact a mediation service.

Question: Why aren't you open more hours?

Answer: In order to keep our substations open, we must have volunteers that are qualified to operate the Front Desk at the substation.  The more volunteers we have, the longer the substations can remain open.  The C.O.P.S. Substation belongs to the neighborhood.  The substation and the programs available through Spokane C.O.P.S. will only be operational if the community members participate.  It is NOT operated by the police, Department of Correction or City Hall.

Question: There is an abandoned vehicle on my property.  How can I get it removed?

Answer: The Spokane Police Department will not have it towed from private property as that is the responsibility of the property owner.  You may call the SPD Front Desk at 625-4100 to find out if the vehicle was reported stolen.  Give them the license number and the VIN number.
