About Us

The North Hill C.O.P.S. Shop is a mobile van which can be taken to events and locations throughout our neighborhood.

We primarily serve the area within the boundaries of the North Hill Neighborhood Council, yet have the flexibility to serve other areas, too.  Our primary service area includes the boundaries of Francis on the North, Division on the East, Cora/Courtland on the South and Ash on the West.

We began as a Neighborhood Observation Patrol in the mid-1990s when parts of our neighborhood experienced an increase in nighttime crime.  As interest grew, we have explored setting up a C.O.P.S. Substation.

In the late 1990s, access to a "retired" library van has provided us the flexibility to reach out wherever we're needed.  Over the years, volunteers renovated the van, installed cabinets & countertops, acquired office supplies & furnishings, and gave it a new paint job.

Programs
  • Neighborhood and Community-Wide Outreach and Education

  • Block Watch - volunteers organize their neighbors to prevent crime.  If you'd like to update or organize a Block Watch with your neighbors, give us a call.

  • Neighborhood Observation Patrol (NOP) - We become the eyes and ears of the police throughout our neighborhood.  Daytime and nighttime volunteers drive residential streets and arterials, school and park parking lots.  They report what they find and may contact law enforcement for emergencies.

Services

Our mobile van appears at events around the community.  We take part in the Garland Village Arts Festival. For Night Out Against Crime, we bring the van to block parties and hand out information.  While at the North Hill Neighborhood Council clean-ups, we collect food for the food bank.  Our volunteers also attend a training workshop on forms and procedures.  We are teaming up with other C.O.P.S. Shops to help with their events and showcase our mobile van in their neighborhoods.  Call us if you are planning an event!

Secretary/Treasurer:  Ruth Snyder

N.O.P. Coordinator:  Jeff Zabinski

The volunteers at C.O.P.S. North Hill are men and women of various ages.  Some are retired and others currently working in various businesses.  Their common cause is helping the neighborhoods and their citizens maintain and improve their quality of life and safety.  We need more people to staff the van at different locations.  Call us if you'd like to learn more.

Partnerships

Following are some of the partners we've had over the last ten years:

We thank the many community businesses and individuals who have helped us furnish and paint the van, support our efforts, etc.

Fundraisers

Over the years, a number of fundraisers have helped us operate our program.  These include:

  • raffle of four bicycles along with bike helmets

  • participation in the "Evening of Giving" hosted by Northtown Mall

  • donation boxes at area merchants

  • rest area coffee service

We serve coffee and treats at a freeway rest area West of Spokane.  This is an annual event.  Volunteers will supply the treats and host the rest area during a Spring weekend.  They donate cookies, beverages and serving supplies, as well as their time at the rest area.  If you'd like to help with future ventures like this one, please let us know.  There's always room for more volunteers!
