What is National Night Out?

National Night Out is an annual celebration of neighborhood events held all over the country on the first Tuesday evening in August. This night is designed to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police–Night Out Logocommunity partnerships in our community. We encourage Spokane neighbors to use this national celebration as an opportunity to hold events in your neighborhood. The goals of these events are to meet your neighbors, meet Spokane Community Policing Officers who work in your neighborhood, and show your support for your neighborhood and community.

YOU should host an event!

We invite you to host your neighborhood’s National Night Out event this year. Your event can be as unique as you and your neighborhood. Simple celebrations can be sharing an ice cream treat, while more elaborate events may include an evening of music and children’s activities. Spokane police, fire crews and city officials have participated in Night Out events in the past, creating an ‘instant’ party atmosphere on your block!

It’s EASY to be a NNO Event Host!

As a neighborhood NNO event host, your job can be simple…and we are committed to helping you put together an easy, successful event. While your NNO event may include whatever area of houses seems natural to you, consider a ‘block’ party where the houses facing each other on your street are invited—this may include as few as 10 or 20 households. The location will likely be your driveway or yard. Ask a neighbor or two to help provide food (ice cream, beverages, cookies, etc.). Put together a flyer for your event that you (or neighbor kids) can slip into each house’s door. We will invite neighborhood officials of your choice.

Block Watch Programs make your Neighborhood safer all year!

Because National Night Out is an event created to encourage Police-Community Partnerships, we are also encouraging blocks to consider forming a Block Watch program. If you feel your block is interested, Spokane C.O.P.S. can follow up with you after the event.

GOT A MINUTE?
Let's Talk About Crime.

Crime has two victims. One is the person who suffers loss or injury. The other is the community.  When faced with rising crime, neighbors retreat behind locked doors, merchants abandon businesses, and streets become empty at night. Fear creates isolation, and that increases the neighborhood’s vulnerability to crime.

Crime doesn’t have to be a fact of life.  Millions of citizens in thousands of neighborhoods across the country have proven that building a sense of community and taking common sense

precautions can cut crime and counter fear. It takes time, energy, and commitment, but the results are worth it!

If you've been a victim of crime, you understand the need to step up and take responsibility for your own safety and that of your family and perhaps your neighbors.  If you have not been a victim of crime... statistics say that you WILL sometime in your life.  To help minimize that possibility, EVERYONE needs to take an active role in preparing themselves with the resources and knowledge necessary to help maintain the quality of life they expect.
